FAQ

iTEP Intern FAQ

What are the main differences between iTEP Intern and other tests on the market?

The vast majority of English tests available to private companies are not calibrated for evaluating interns. While many tests, such as our iTEP Business exam, assess English skills needed in the workplace, iTEP Intern is the only one that specifically measures the skills needed by J-1 Visa interns. iTEP Intern is also the only test that is affordable and convenient enough to be an integral part of the intern screening process.

What skills does iTEP Intern assess?

iTEP Intern assesses the skills most commonly used in an internship: speaking and listening. Test-takers are required to produce actual speaking samples which are scored by native-English-speaking ESL professionals. These samples can be accessed by administrators evaluating test-takers. Learn more about the test format and scoring.

In what form are the test results provided?

The Official iTEP Intern Score Report shows the test-taker’s overall level (from 0-Beginner to 6-Mastery), as well as levels attained on both of iTEP Intern’s two sections (listening and speaking), and subskills for the listening section. Results are presented in both tabular and graphical formats.

How are iTEP Intern's levels interpreted?

iTEP Intern levels range from 0 (beginner) to 6 (mastery) and are expressed in .1 increments (e.g. 2.1, 2.1, 2.3, etc.). To get a rough idea of how well an individual can use English to communicate in the “real world” at each of iTEP Intern’s six levels (and how they compare to CEFR levels), please refer to the iTEP Business Ability Guide. While this test contains additional sections that iTEP Intern does not, and includes different content within the questions, the logic for determining levels is the same.

How does iTEP Intern ensure test security?

Our clients typically administer iTEP Intern on their own office computers. iTEP staff is available to troubleshoot and guide you through the process. iTEP Intern can also be administered at a Certified iTEP Test Center, or home computers if test security is not a concern. See the iTEP Intern test security page for more information about test security.

How much does the test cost?

The wholesale price of iTEP Intern varies based on volume and location. Please contact us directly if you are in a country that does not yet have a distributor.

What is the difference between iTEP Business and iTEP Intern?

iTEP Business is used by businesses and organizations to assess the English proficiency of employees or potential hires at any level of the business, from entry to executive. iTEP Intern focuses on just the key skills of listening and speaking, and makes use of situations and scenarios interns are likely to encounter.

At this time, iTEP Intern does not have a paper test version available. We feel the speaking section is essential in providing an accurate assessment of a potential intern, and the most feasible way to score this section of the test is over the Internet.
