iTEP Hospitality FAQ
The vast majority of English tests available to private companies are not specific to the hospitality industry. While in some cases, our competitors’ English courses may contain an English test, iTEP Hospitality is the only test using content designed specifically for the industry. It’s also the only test that is affordable and convenient enough to be integrated into the hiring practices of a hospitality business.
iTEP Hospitality assesses the skills most commonly used in a customer-facing environment of a hospitality professional: speaking and listening. Test-takers are required to produce actual speaking samples which are scored by native-English-speaking ESL professionals. These samples can be accessed by administrators evaluating test-takers for hiring or promotions. Learn more about the test format and scoring.
The Official iTEP Hospitality Score Report shows the test-taker’s overall level (from 0-Beginner to 6-Mastery), as well as levels attained on each of the tests sections (listening and speaking). The listening section also includes subskills that provide further detail on the test tester’s specific strengths. Results are presented in both tabular and graphical formats.
iTEP Hospitality levels range from 0 (beginner) to 6 (mastery) and are expressed in .1 increments (e.g. 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc.). To get a rough idea of how well an individual can use English to communicate in the “real world” at each of iTEP Hospitality’s six levels (and how they compare to CEFR levels), please refer to the iTEP Business Ability Guide. While this test contains additional sections that iTEP Hospitality does not, and includes different content within the questions, the logic for determining levels is the same.
Our clients typically administer iTEP Hospitality on their own office computers. iTEP staff is available to troubleshoot and guide you through the process. iTEP Hospitality can also be administered on home computers if test security is not a concern. See the iTEP Hospitality test security page for more information about test security.

iTEP Business is used by businesses and organizations interested in a test of English proficiency that employs situations and terminology characteristic of a professional office environment. iTEP Business also assesses five skills. iTEP Hospitality focuses on just the key skills of listening and speaking, and makes use of situations and scenarios unique to the hospitality industry.
At this time, iTEP Hospitality does not have a paper test version available. We feel the speaking section is essential in providing an accurate assessment of a hospitality professional, and the most feasible way to score this section of the test is over the Internet.
